La Sphere at the CES

Saw something in the newspaper today.

They had a small story about one of the more interesting things at the new CES show called "La Sphere". (???)

It is a single speaker that is capable of providing sound that
covers the entire range of human hearing. There was a picture, and it was NOT a box with a bunch of different drivers in it, but ONE SPEAKER.

Anyone heard of this or know anything about it????????

Early in 2006, Cabasse will strike again in Vegas with another revolutionary announcement about the latest development in the so-called coaxial system, a prototype dubbed "La Sphère". THis time, the baby is loaded with a 4-way coaxial "Q55" transducer. Cabasse claims a frequency range of 20 Hz to 22000 Hz, as well as an ideal space diffusion.

I heard the Cabasse demo of these prototype speakers at THE Show. They were in a huge room, and they filled it up nicely. The low end was very extended- it sounded like they had a huge sub hidden somewhere, but it was all coming from the spheres. The woofers are enormous, looked to me like 27" or thereabouts.

Although impressive, the speakers still seemed to me to have the higher distortion and less dynamically free presentation typical of direct radiators. I've got to admire the Cabasse engineers' ingenuity and fresh thinking though.

Nothing more than large headphone transducor if you ask me!
