    How would you implement 416-8z 414z 511B and 2404H ?

    I have some drivers I want to use in a basement system with a 2way active crossover and SET/ss amps. I'd like to keep the passive components to a minimum. Many questions

    I read that the Altec 9862 uses versions of the 416 and 414 together. Does anyone know where they're crossed over or what size/tuning the enclosures are? Is the 414 sealed?

    Can I use the 511B/808-8A without eq if the JBL 2404H fills in the top end? Should I skip the 511B altogether?

    I saw that JE Labs built a 2-way with the 414 running full range. Can I do that while also running the 416?

    I'm only really firm on using the woofers that I have and the 18dB/Octave active crossover because I like all those things. Any tips are helpful

    A tiny bit of reading//research for you The Altec "4343"

    I wouldn't bother mixing the light coned 414z with the standard 416-8z ( light cone ).

    For a woofer ( in a 4-way such as this ) one ( OK maybe just myself ) wants a heavier coned 15 ( or 18 ) doing the bass duties.

    MMS north of @ 130 grams ( in a 15" woofer ) is a good place to start to ( when one wants punch with deep bass ).

    I realize this isn't what you want to hear // but it is what it is.

    Thanks Earl, glad I asked. Better to find out in the planning stage. I thought the added mass on the 416-8bd was there so the box could be smaller. It will be easier for me to start with a 2 way anyway

    To answer your first question;

    I would ( excluding the 414z ) make a version of the Model 19 using the 808-8b + 511b horn ( with the 2404h tweeter rolling in naturally around 10K by just using a single small cap > such as 1uF ).

    Box size for the 416 would be anywhere from 7 to 9.5 cu' .

    I would choose a crossover point for the horn-2-woofer transition ( through listening of what sounded in the range between 700 to 1250 hz ) .
    (FWIW ) I have an @ 700hz crossover point for my Altec 288-8K ( done electronically > sort-of )

    I think I'll use the model 19 dimensions for the 416's but with a tunable port. Should the cabinet be thick walled or is it better to use the prescribed Altec construction?

    You might get some good build ideas by reading through "GDM's" thread over at Audio Karma.
