    Chasing down buzz's and rattles

I just had some fun. Got a very high Q buzz in one of may cabinets. Only happened on a couple of CD's and only on a couple of specific notes. It seemed to be getting worse so I thought I would try to find it.

Turns out I forgot to tighten my 5 way binding posts on my crossover boards. I use banana plugs so they are not snugged down to hold wires in place.

Just a reminder to check everything. I took me a while to find it and it's the last thing I thought to check! It was a no it couldn't be moment.

You use banana plugs?! How un-audiophile!

I do too. I always space my DIY project binding posts 3/4” apart so that they are dual banana plug compatible.

Really? I always thought it was the way to go, gold plated and all the bells and whistles...
I use speakon and solder, which is probably frowned upon in the audiophile community .

Speakon when and wherever possible for me too.

Speakon connectors are from pro audio. Most audiophiles who waste gobs of cash on silly things aren’t even aware of them.

I think Speakon connectors are great, we use them at work, but at home they are less convenient than 5 way binding posts and good old Pamona bananas. It’s also kinda force of habit. I’ve been using them since the ‘70s.

My 250Ti's have 5 ways posts . I always prefer a good bare wire connection, BUT old JBL posts won't take 12 ga.

On most JBL bookshelves I usually swap out for newer post , but on the 250's .. the posts MAY (didn't check out yet) connect directly to the XOVER.

So it has also been bananas for me too.

When it’s all about electrical contact area nothing beats a properly crimped 1/4” spade lug snugly fitted under a five way binding post. Barrier strips and spade lugs are a close second. Speakons are miles or perhaps square millimeters ahead of spring posts but still behind spade lugs.
