    2 way useing 2242/2258?

Have anyone tried useing 2242 or 2258 in a 2 way setup, running them up to 7-800hz?

    I'm thinking "M2 style" with 2258 instead of 2216ND.

Did JBL ever do it? If not, why not?

To me the upper limit of 2242's is about 250 to 300hZ maybe. I have not yet experimented with 2258's.

Maybe with a really big horn, or a Synergy horn.

If we knew what the hell we were doing, we wouldn't call it research would we.

I know JBL didn't use them other than as subs, but that doesn't mean that it couldn't work!

MMS is rather low of 2258 (140), lower than i.e. 2216ND, shouldn't that indicate that it might work OK as an mid?

I was mainly thinking useing M2 horn with 4" driver and 2258 since I have them already, I could also use larger horn to lower the XO, but mainly thinking M2.

The JBL 2245 with its heavy Aquaplased cone is crossed at 320Hz in the 4345 i think... But many (including me) will say its sweetspot is under 80Hz.

But... That being said my next project is another 2-way using an 18" 2240 (with a lighter cone than the 2245) under a 2360. Hoping to cross at around 500/600Hz.
The 2240 has an Fs 30Hz and is more punchy than the 2245 but doesn't go as low. Nonetheless it gets you more "real life" bass than a 2245. I don't necessarily need to shake the walls of my house each and everytime I turn the sound system on... ;-)

The 2258H is quite similar ( IME ) in performance to that of the 2240 ( it is a lot nicer to carry around for those of us doing mobile work ).

    baldrick,

Give it a go ( even if you don't have fully developed design chops for this sort of thing > at the very least, you'll learn quite a lot ) .

    HI LEE..,
very interesting idea 2240&2360&2446.50 (AL if possible ), so I have to say ^compact economical solution^, may voices would not be as 2202 driven, but wainting for Your presentation soon.

Ps. May 2242 has not to be neglected in the same story, look at
    JBL TECH.NOTES NO.34, VOL1.

I remember doing a service call out to the Morongo Basin/Twenty Nine Palms area to a spiritual retreat center in about 1990.

They had a floor area with some JBL custom designed cabinets at each corner of the floor...4 of them... that housed dual 2240H with HL89 on 2440 or 2441 drivers. I don't recall if they were crossed at 500 or 800, but the enclosures were about 6-7 feet tall and about 3 feet deep... they were HUUUUUGE!! The floor area was approximately 20'x20'.

They were designed for extreme sound immersion in some sort of metaphysical/meditation ritual. Definitely imposing and impressive pieces of furniture done in walnut. It was also a nice service call to refresh (8) 2240H. Worth the 80 mile each way drive.

That's my next project right after I finish restoring my 1996 Honda Africa Twin ;-) Should be done in a few weeks. The blueprints for the 10,4cft cabinets are already done. Well, they've been ready for a few years. I will use the same construction as a Onken cabinet for rigidity, but without going into the Onken basics, which involves vents being half the area of the woofer.

Did anyone ever try this? I'm thinking of building something using an 18" up to 300Hz or so, crossing over to a 2123. I have one 2242, but I can buy a pair of 2258's for less than a single 2242. There isn't that much information online about the 2258.

These are from Bohne-Audio, I was actually going to post pictures as well but you´ve been faster.

The manufacturer is actually a friend of mine, Jörg Bohne.
He uses an own DSP and massive amps to drive them. Woofers are 2242h and the high-mid is some kind of own development if I remember correct.
