JBL L100 saved from the street curb

It has been a while, but I am still around and still playing hard in the audio sandbox. My latest score is a pair of JBL L100 speakers that a friend of a friend was throwing out. He was moving and didn't want the entire stereo system (Pioneeer Spec series with rack and the L100's) because the amp and speakers were blown. My friend knows me as the audio guy so he brought it to me.

Here is a picture after I sanded the cabinet and put on the first coat of polyurethane.

A friend of mine works at a foam company. He cut some reticulated foam for the grills.

With the grill on next to some Altec 870B I just refinished, after they sat in my shed for 10 years.

Well done! It’s great to see projects like these where speakers are brought back to life!

    Thanks for sharing!

Truth be told the 123A-3 woofers are bad. The voice coils are rubbing. So for now, I have installed a pair of 122A that I had sitting on a shelf.

Nice work! What is your refinish process? Do you apply the poly with a brush or roller?

Once sanded down to 400 grit, I spray on multiple coats of finish. Depending on the project, that could be polyurethane or lacquer. For a few hardwood items, I have wiped on Liberon Finishing Oil.

These grills are nice and simple but I do have some groovy sculpted blue grills coming.
