Speaker cabinet feet: purpose and construction

Spikes, stands, cylinders, cones....what's in a speaker cabinet foot?

I've read that the idea is to prevent vibrations from being transferred to the medium on which the cabinet rests. I've never seen any conclusive evidence to suggest that a spike/cone is a good method for accomplishing this, nor do I understand why we would want to do this anyway.

What about DIY construction? Turning these things from a solid piece of stainless seems to be the easiest method. If this is how you built yours, how did you make them adjustable? Did you reinforce the cabinet on the inside where the feet mount? If they were threaded feet, how did you deal with the screw? Felt on the bottom? Rubber on the bottom?

    Thanks!

Even easier than DIY is to get some furniture feet from you local hardware store. They're usually adjustable but not usually spiked.

Depends on the problem being addressed.

If adjustable spikes are your thing, check out snowmobile supplies.
