Audio Intelligibility

A friend asked me if I knew of software/hardware that could be used to improve the intelligibility of a bootleg cassette tape that he made of a spoken word performance some years ago. I have no idea what is available but thought that this diverse group might be able to help. He has a current Mac and can use it to convert the cassette to a digital file, but beyond that???
