I have no idea of the production numbers. I can tell you that the industrial design (appearance) was the work of Arnold Wolf, consultant to JBL for years and (later) JBL President for a while. Search this site for more info on him. Prior to this he had done industrial design for the Sargent Rayment line of electronics. Research these for similar design themes.
The circuit design was (AFAIK) the work of Bart Locanthi, featuring his then-novel, later commonplace T-circuit output stage design.
