    4320/4333

    Hi

I need a quick assesment. I have the possibility of buying a pair of "JBL 4333" - upgraded from JBL 4320. 4333's are quite rare here in Scandinavia.
But I am a bit nervous about the upgrade - especially the woofer and the XO.

    Here are the details:

enclosure & grills are original JBL 4320

    woofer: 2215B

    midrange: 2307+2420+org lenses.

    tweeter: 2405

    XO: 3110+N7000

The seller is offering a complete reconeset for 2235/136 within the 2000 USD that is the complete askingprice.

Does the upgrade look serious - especially the XOs and the woofer, which for sure is'nt in the 4333-League??? (but propably Its still a much better speaker compared to my Jubals)

What is the verdict from the worlds best and most helpfull experts?? :-)

    cheers

"Recone set?" What does he mean by that? Be careful--1) 2215b frames are not suitable to be reconed as 2231/136/2235. The frames are different; 2) be certain any recones, even in correct frames, are genuine factory recones and not aftermarket. Also the 4333 horn is the H92/2312, not the 2307. You need that longer horn for the 800 cycle crossover. The 3110 is an 800Hz crossover, but with the true 4333 components you really need the response shaping performed by the correct crossover, the 3133. You need the longer horn now because the 2307 really should be crossed at 1200Hz, too high for either woofer. The woofers, horns and crossovers in the speakers could be sold to recoup some of your further outlay for completing the transition.

Those 4320's could be transformed into a true 4333-like speaker with extensive parts substitution, and possibly retuning the cabinet, but the speakers you describe are not there yet. Or even close, actually. If you install the correct horn without changing anything else you might find you have a speaker you can enjoy as it is. I've never listened to that combination of components, so I really couldn't say.

    What is the verdict . . . .

I have in the past used both the 4333A and the L65. The former is an improvement over the latter in my opinion, and I would think also for most folks as well. The 4333 or L300 is a really nice speaker, a goal worth shooting for. The speaker you describe could be said to be a step forward also, but there would be several more steps to a full-on 4333.

IMO, you'd be better off sourcing all the correct components for the 4333A or B by getting true 2235H's, the 2420/2312 driver/long horn, 2308/H91 lenses, and 2405H tweeter, plus either the 3133 / N333 crossover or build you own crossover (regular or charge coupled) from the plans here at LH, and have someone build you the correct later 4503WX cabinet, and veneer to your choosing.

The 4320 was a nice speaker but it used the older overhang cabinet which is a bit clunky looking, while the later 4331/4333 used the nice beveled front monitor cabinet with the famous JBL Blue baffle (unless finished in studio gray with black baffle). But its essentially a big box cabinet which isn't particularly difficult to build with the right tools and the right person using the tools.

If you're really ambitious, then build the consumer counterpart L300 cabinet with a bit of a raised platform bottom (about 6-8 inches). The trick is building good grilles for both if you need them to protect the drivers from fingers.

You could easily spend exactly the same amount of money, and get everything the way you want it this way, instead of spending 2K on the "upgraded" 4320, and still have incorrect woofer frames, etc. because its not the right basis for a 4333, but rather the 4320 is essentially an L200B.

You being in Denmark any Jbl is quite rare I'd assume. All of those components are correct for 4320 and 2405 n7000 correct for upgrade to 4333. Or close enough for that price.

I mostly agree with this post. I certainly agree with the goal. I personally prefer the aesthetics of the 4333 series over the L300 or the 4320, but that is in the eye of the beholder. For audio performance the 4333/L300 is definitely an upgrade.

If you are not a woodworker, then buying this system as is and eventually changing out the woofers and building the 3133 networks which are posted here along with CC and Nelson Pass upgraded versions might be a good way to go. You should be able to sell the 2215B woofers and get the 2235H for almost no cost... getting the 2312/H92 horns will take a little while to find at the right price, but it is fairly easy to do.

If you do not know it, the 2215B is a pro version of the LE15A and the 2312 is the pro version of the H92. Over the years JBL went from only consumer numbers to pro and consumer and then to mostly only pro numbers. The 2235H was used in both pro and consumer products with the same model number. It can get a bit confusing.

Red face Thanks for the advices

    Hi everybody

thank you very much for the answers. It was very helpfull. I've decided to let the speakers go. The enclosures and the tweeters where in pretty bad shape, and I havent got the time and patience to start a complete rebuilding-project and it can be quite difficult and expensive to get the correct parts, as some of you have menthioned
so now I wait and see if a better pair of 4333 or L300 is showing up. With patience...

Jesper, this is a much bigger stretch for your budget, but IMO, superior speakers from a well known member in Amsterdam, perhaps not so far away for shipping or moving.

    Did you get pics?

    Hi Jesper,
Did you get any pictures of the cabinets? I'm doing the same conversion and I wonder if your seller had also blocked off and shortened one of the (2) ports so as to tune it closer to a real 4333 cabinet.

I have another thread going on this but no responses so far so I'm just reaching out to people who might know.

    Thanks, David
