    versions of 2118H

I recently purchased on ebay to match my other drivers units that cosmetically look like :

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/JBL-2118H-8-...item2c86d1c6bd

However it seems that the reconed drivers have a completely different treatment to the cone :

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/JBL-2118H-MI...item4181743688

The claim for the seller is the later is a genuine kit from JBL. This concerns me because I have a damaged driver I would like to recone and visually they are not the same.

It appears that a surface treatment was added to later models. Anyone have the inside scoop on this so I understand how I might want to repair?

The ( used ) 2118H seen in the second link has had it's cone treated with a water repellent of some sort ( that's not stock ) .

That sort of treatment is a very common practice for speakers that are meant to be used on stage ( outside ), by pro sound companies . Clair Bros. & Audio Analysts ( amongst others ) used to use vast quantities of these eights ( they were used as specialized front fill boxes ) . I have to imagine these examples originate from one such company ( who've likely moved onto using newer JBL's with neodymium type magnets ) .

The blow-out prices ( $40.00 ) seen in the second link are way below the cost of a single recone kit .

You're better off ( IMO ) buying a few ( of those cheapies ) with the cone treatment . Just have the seller pick you out that don't have rubbing coils & that have proper DCR's for the coils .

My only concern is with the coating how that might affect the upper frequency range. I am concerned the voicing for the speakers will not be the same as the older cone.

    Questions?
