And hey, what's that in David Byrne's ear in the above photo? Too early for bluetooth.
Looks like Sony MDR-W08 or a similar predecessor. You can see a narrow headband above.

Auratones place that pic squarely in the middle of the Walkman era...

Auratones are lovely nearfield "cubes" to work with but you have to have the capacity to imagine the basses!

It seems like the 4311's , 4310's and L100's are in the background of more old studio photos than any other JBL. Keith Richards actually mentions JBL speakers a couple of times in his book.

Maybe that's just what they needed at studios back then? The 4310/11/L100 have their own sound signature with very good dynamics and strongly exposed midrange.
Makes me wonder how they sound compared to the NS10M.

    Mark Mothersbaugh, Devo

Mothersbaugh with "TONTO" at his Studio, and a pair of 4333's I think. Stevie Wonder used this setup pretty extensively too

A couple years ago, I seem to remember reading that Stevie was using the bigger PMC models, like BB5's or MB2's or something. Might have been a particular studio he was using, idk.

    Fleetwood Mac, Tusk

Apologies for the terrible quality of this clip, actually it's Lindsay Buckingham's fault One of his home videos of a recording session for Tusk, 4311's in use.

They most likely sound great, but those are without doubt the ugliest speakers I've ever seen.

I've seen a few PMC models in-person at Audio Classics and the cabinet work looks second to none, but that sewer grate over the woofers is pretty loud. I'd assume that in a studio the aesthetic wouldn't matter so much.

They did sound pretty damned good though. The transmission-line low end was among the best I'd ever heard.

Agreed. I have looked before for the need for the heavy front frame but never found anything. Assumed it was part of the frame support for the driver. Have not heard any of their models but they certainly have a good reputation.

Interesting operation tucked away in south in an unlikely spot. I like the Dorset area. Be nice to work and live in that area.
