    DIY newbie 1x2405, 1x2447j, 1x2381, 2x 2206. Hars sound. What to do?

    Hello!

I`m new in this with designing own speakers so be gentle on me. Also my english is not the best but i hope you understand me.

    Resently I bougt speakers with 1x2405, 1x2447j, 1x2381, 2x 2206. (SR4732A)
I cross them active betwen 2206 and 2247. The 2405 is passive crossed with a 1F capacitor on the HP. I`we testet some diffren x-overs with not wery big diffrenses.
I also tested the recomended DBX setting but mabye it is for the 4731a without the 2405? I`m not sure anymore. Here is the settings: LP: LO 29,5hz BW 12db, HI 1224 LR 24db. HP: LO 1587 Hi Off
    PEQ LO 1: 233hz, Q 1,2, -5db. 2: 561hz, Q 3,4, -4,5db
    PEQ HI 1: 2670hz, Q 2,6, -6db. 2: 4760hz, Q1,2, -2db. 3: 8000hz, 9 db/okt, +4db

I found this tread and mabye the 2381 is my problem? http://www.audioheritage.org/vbullet...-For-home-HiFi
X-over is Behringer ultradrive (not the best i know) but i don`t think this is the problem. I have also tested with a JBL x-over.

I will be happy for all help

    Regards from Sweden!
    /Karl

The sound may be harsh because of the excessive medium, caused by the lack of bass. 2206 are not really strong in the two bottom octaves. Perhaps you should borrow a three way digital crossover and rebalance, re equ everything.

Have you checked compression drivers' diaphragms? Are they cracked?

1F cap as filter for the tweeter? Are you sure? It means basically the whole range goes into the tweeter. No filtering.

    Don't you have a 2404 baby butt tweeter (not a 2405 slot tweeter) ?

I also have a 2x2241 (4719x) bass module crossed at 80hz. So the crossover is 3-way. But as you say I would ned 4-way and I hopfully will get that on wednesday. The tweeter is a 2405 (as your picture). It`s not me who built the speakers but they say that a cap should cut 6db/okt from 20 000hz. In Sweden some people do that way I read. Mabye I shall disconect it untill I get a 4 way x.

    Hi Karl.

If you already have a 3-way crossover, here's what I suggest you do. All you need is to find or build a clone of an N8000 crossover. Basically your Behringer unit would use one channel for bass (JBL 2241 - 20Hz to 80Hz), one channel for upper bass/lower mid (JBL 2206 - 80Hz to 1KHz) and one channel into an N8000 filter (1KHz to 20KHz). This N8000 filter would feed the JBL 2247 and JBL 2405, where the JBL 2405 is cut at 8KHz.

I don't know what is your budget, but you could also get some of those MiniDSP which offer 2x8 systems on a budget... I think that going digital is your solution.

    Hi again!

I`m thinking of the DSP HD but firs i would lika my system to sound a little better. You think the harsh sound is a corssover problem betwen 2447 and 2405? What do you think about this?: http://www.audioheritage.org/vbullet...-For-home-HiFi You don`t belive it is a horn problem? Can aquapas diagrams solve my problem?
How much EQ should be nessesary for a 2447/2381 to sound nice?
I`we tested to put a tape over the 2405 ant I think it sounded a little softer and nicer.
Tomorrow i will get one more aktive x-over so I can cross all speakers active. Any suggestions on how to make the N8000 crossover active/digital in the behringer?

    Thanks!
    /Karl
