Hmm, what to do with all these JBL drivers and parts?

I went to a garage cleanout today and picked up a bunch of interesting things...




2 each of the following:

JBL 15" 2220J
JBL 15" 2220A
JBL 15" 2220B
JBL 15" 2225H
JBL 15" 2225J

JBL 12" E120-16

JBL 2305 Lens
McCauley 421 Lens


Singles of:

JBL 15" 2226H
JBL 1" K140
JBL 1" HL180HF
JBL 1" 2461
JBL 1" 2420

I am assessing condition of each driver with continuity, DCR, and power tests to see which drives are functional and which aren't. 4 of the drives came in a pair of subwoofer cabinets, but I think I may have other plans for the cabinets.



I'm not sure what exactly to do with these yet, but it is quite the stack of drivers.

You can definitely leave them in your car's trunk for winter. That's good ballast to help you go up the hill after a snowstorm...

If I had eight 2220 I would build eight straight bass horns, 4 on each side. This is too big for most people, but you seem to have lots of space.

Use these drivers to trade what you really would like to have.

As I go through these, can I recone with beefier soft parts? Is there a guide on what recone kits fit what frames?

You won't have to worry about what JBL kits fit what frames, because that decision has been made for you by the Powers That Be at Harman. Since they couldn't figure out how to manufacture to typical JBL high standards, the legacy kits for the higher precision 2220, E-Series, and 2122 kits have been discontinued.

It's now up to the expertise of the reconer to build decent drivers with aftermarket parts. The good news is...many aftermarket parts have improved significantly.

You definitely should think building a few bass horns. Each bass horn will replace two, if not three, of these little boxes...

I have gone the horn route, my 20hz requirement makes horns impractical. Multiple bass reflex has proven the best way to go. High excursion 18s tend to be the best compromise in output and pack space. I do like working with 21s, but they still don't displace enough for the required pack space. My Vd:cabinet volume ratio has to stay as high as possible. The Sundown Audio Zv3 series have proven to be very resilient in my particular application.
