spikes, who use them?

Can someone elaborate the benefit of using spikes?
Better imaging? decoupling speakers from floor resonance?
I'm curious to know because it sounds like a "cheap" thing to try beside the fact that a 175 lbs speaker is going to drill a big hole in my really nice ebony floor finish
