Optimal cabinet design for E145 drivers

    Hello!

I have a pair of E145 drivers that I am running in my mocked up test system as the bottoms using an active crossover at 350hz. They are installed in a pair of old Cerwin-Vega cabs to just hear it all with the other components.

Everything I have read about the accuracy of these drivers agrees with what I hear. JBL has a standard cab design in the JBLPRO site using 4.0 cubic feet with 2 4"x6.5" ports. This design applies to several of their drivers.

If I put this cab design into BassBox Pro, Fb=35hz (ok I think), and F3=88hz. Run the curve and this looks dismal. Changing the box size and ports show no improvement in the curves. I am a relative newbie to the software but am using the supplied JBL T/S values.

So....ignore the software and build the JBL cab? I know the drivers will sound great and I am using a subwoofer for 20 to 50hz.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Other designs anyone has used?

    Thanks!

    Hello buzz

I use E-145's with subs under crossed at 50hz and 300hz. They work just fine. Don't expect improvement on the low end unless you go for a much larger box. Try 6-8 cubic ft.

Thanks! No, I don't want to take them lower. Was your cabinet design just the standard JBL 4.0 cu.ft. and ports or something you designed?

    Hello buzz

I designed my own. It is a three way so I needed a larger box. The woofer is in 5 cu ft tuned to 40Hz. I knew up front I had subs.

Nice! E110s? I have understood this combination is excellent.

My test system (with the E145's as bottoms) is set up with an Altec model 14 horn/driver and crossover in an open baffle with a Richard-Allen (RA) 12" full-range (old British). The sound is sweet. I'm not really set up for scientifically testing the results. I just enjoy the sound. Tight bass, sweet in the mid-range and not harsh.

    Thanks for you reply.
