So is there a rule of thumb on break in of newly reconed woofers? I was going to use a 60 Hz test tone through a Crown amplifier. Should I exercise the heck out of the woofer? Duration?

I just use 'em. I wouldn't run my new car down the railroad tracks just to soften up the suspension nor would I artificially age new drivers just making noise I don't want to hear. Unless it's really loud 60Hz won't move the cone much anyway.
If we knew what the hell we were doing, we wouldn't call it research would we.
Thanks! Maybe I will push them a little bit to see what "gives".

Temporarily close the ports, and toss a little bottom end boosting EQ at them. It'll take more amp power for a while, but it'll get you increased excursion and break them in faster- and go boom better
