I assumed that Punch has a turntable.

As we see there are many ways to do this and with different $$$ involved.
We never ask Punch if he has PC or a MAC, the Mac would be easier.

Punch, If you ever come to the Millennium Park area of Chicago PM me and I'll give you a tour of the Radio Station. John

you just need a 2 rca female to single male mini adapter , so to plug the TT into the soundcard..

    then DL Audacity ...http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/

    and follow the wizzs...

I use AudioLava Premium , it sims an RIAA preamp pretty well , makes great audio files , great job of cleaning (even a cool option to audition JUST the noise that you've cleaned out)

    Why over-complicate things?

I just plug the turntable into an old amplifier or receiver, and then run this into my PCs sound card. The better the phono stage of the amp, the better sound you'll get. Good doesn't have to be expensive, the NAD3020 has a great phono stage for not a lot of money used.

I then use Goldwave to record the files. Again, it's cheap (or even free) and it works well.

I did the same. Plug the output of the turntable into the pre-amp and the output of the pre-amp into the mini-pin jack on the computer. You will need a phono-plug to stereo mini-plug cable. They are available at Radio Shack or other electronics stores for ~$10. I used the output of the pre-amp rather than the tape-out because I find that Audacity doesn't have the fine adjustment for level controls for my purposes.

I use public domain Audacity to digitize the analog signal, and LAME to convert the .WAV file to .MP3. I believe that FACE will also do better job than LAME, but LAME is more than adequate for my purposes. Most any CD/DVD burning software will be able to burn an audio CD. I believe that Microsoft Windows Media Player will also.
