    Alte Stonehenge III frames

I am ordering replacement foam grilles for a pair of Stonehenge III speakers. I bought them and they had no foam but had black material of some kind stretched and glued onto wood frames. I wanted to find out if the black material was original to the speakers under the foam or likely put on after the foam deteriorated. If the material is not original then I wanted to remove it or at least cut the holes back open. My next question is would the foam grilles need to be sculpted out a little on the inside where the speakers are because as you can see in pic the 604's push out a little beyond the plane of the frames.
