    Various LE5 models

    I have 1 LE5-2 for my L100 project. Still trying to find a 2nd.

eBay has 2 other models on auction. LE5-8 and LE5-10.

    Can I use them?

I am disappointed in the pics of the eBay items. The back of my
-2 has so much class compared to the -8 and -10. They look like the backs of standard 'junk' speakers.

    Am I being too 'snooty'?
    had L25,L36,L40,L120,L300,AquariusIV(2),S1,4408 have L65,L100,L222,DorianS12,B380

I am also looking for two of them to do my project:

I had the same question. Are the specs different for the -8 and -10s or they just models made for OEM or Pro speakers.

In my case, I don't care what the backs look like, I just want them to sound good.

Maybe. The following LE5 variants were available to consumers as over the counter components so they had the pretty finishes and foilcals: LE5-2, 2105, 2105H, LE5H

The LE5-8 and LE5-10 are "installed" system drivers and didn't require finished cosmetics on their backsides. Many of the systems used these kinds of drivers. One could end up with 128H's with nice foilcals or simply a white stamp on the back.

The "good" LE5 variants such as the LE5H, 2105H, LE5-9, and LE5-11 that used the edgewound copper ribbon voice coils are no longer serviceable by JBL. Many legacy systems are therefore affected. The cheaper round wire LE5 varients such as the LE5-10 and LE5-12 are still serviceable.

I was a bit surprised at first that they would drop support for the edgewound LE5/2105 and keep it for the round voice coils models. Since the edgewound was used in the pro gear, I would think that’s the market you would want to support. But it’s probably just because they are more expensive to produce. Same thing on tweeters, they dropped the 066 and 044 (the vapor deposit has to cost) but still support the easier to manufacture 033 and 035.

I recently swapped some LE5-9s for the LE5-5s in a pair of L65s. I think there was a slight improvement – a little clearer. I then replaced the LE5-10s in a set of L110s with the LE5-5s. I think this was a huge improvement. Same sonic characteristics (frequency response?), but much better definition. Each instrument can be heard more distinctly as a separate sound. Some time before this I had tried some 104H-2s in the L110s. I didn’t like it. Don’t even know if it sounded better or worse, but it didn’t sound like L110s. I didn’t want to completely change the character of the speakers, just tweak it a little (like adding bypass caps does).

I'm pretty confident the round wire C8RLE510 kit will go away once stock is depleted. That goes for the D8R034 as well.

Hey Donald; Was it you that snagged the two LE5-8s on ebay today?

I wanted them... Oh well, maybe next time. Let us know how they work out.
