    IMAX cinema sound

...went to an IMAX cinema this weekend with the misses.

The sound system was outstanding. Dynamic range was great, sound was very balanced and complete - no holes over the entire spectrum.

Anyway, I assume these were JBL cinema components being run by some mega SS amps.

...the show was not large seating about 200. We sat about 12 rows in at the center.

I would love to peak behind the screen some day.

Thou it maybe the Sonics sound system (Sonics Associates) as used in most IMAX cinemas. Some IMAX cinemas use JBL.

This one is interesting are they trying to compete with the Empire Leicester Square’s 56KW JBL THX sound system as this IMAX boasts 36KW.

I must have creature following me around it’s the only logical answer.

This is very cool! Thank you for posting the photos and links. A few years ago I found a website that said the subs used in IMAX theaters (at the time) were 8 2245H's in a huge slot-loaded cabinet with 4 of them firing towards another 4 of them. The picture looks like what was described, but the drivers don't look like 2245H's. Or maybe they were custom made with rubber surrounds so IMAX wouldn't have to worry about foam rot?

According to the IMAX cinema PPS speaker shown it has 4 on one side and 4 on the other. No mention of firing at each other.By the way the pictures are from an Imax theater in California. That was very easy to find.

Glad you like the pictures. Also notice the enclosure with only the horns. Very difficult to get to for maintenance.

Actually the images of behind the IMAX screen is India I found discovered those images at least 3 years ago. There is at least 10 or 12 images in total showing the crew climbing around the scaffolding.

Does IMAX still use film? They should be the first cinemas to go digital.

But would anyone make a digital projector that would approach the resolution of large 70mm film frame? I doubt it.

15 perf 70mm IMAX film is pure film which has grain structure. Still it’s the projection playback rate of 24fps I think digital will have higher frame rate playback resulting in stable image.

I guess digital will minimize grain structure because when we see real life its nothing but light/shadow colours that makes up the image.

    Theirs more facts here
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IMAX

As to still use film I guess they do as they have large catalogue of titles going back many years. Maybe those titles will be scanned using high resolution for digital IMAX cinema projection in future years?

Digital dose have its means of reducing production costs as IMAX 70mm 15perf is very costly!

Sorry 'bout the hijack. Back to topic.
