Do Audio Systems have good/bad days?

sounds like a crazy question I knowbut I've observed over the years, using a variety of gear, in different houses, that some days a given system with the same music, sounds cleaner, more balanced, more alive than other days.......noticably so...

Just wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience? if there's some science behind it: temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, incoming house current quality that day, amp runtime, other....

do I need to make an appt with a shrink?

    No

Ever had a head cold?? It's more you than the system.

    Yep...

See Rob's answer. A cold would be an extreme example, I think in general we are simply more variable than our audio equipment.

    Hello,
This may come from changes in voltage following days and hours?

Our bodies are wacky... we hear more things when we are in different moods, and hear differently at different times of day... Although sometimes it takes a few minutes for our ears to "tune-in" so to speak. Unless you are waiting for your tubes to warm up it shouldn't matter what else is going on assuming nothing in your system has changed...

Changes in barometric pressure will do that. If the music doesn't sound right, popping my ears can have the same effect as when done on descent in a jet.

Happens to me frequently - something wonky is going on with my left ear these days where at times high frequencies aren't registering well on that side. It's become annoying enough that I'm going to my PCP for a referral to an audiologist. Luckily, I have enough systems in the house that it was very easy to determine it was not the gear, but me.

So, I'd agree with other posts here that it's far less likely your equipment (provided it's relatively new - old gear is prone to all kinds of intermittent variance in my experience) than your body's reaction to something.

    Best,
    - Mike

    Other variables

I suppose certian variables may impact sound quality including:

    • Room accustics
    • Humidity
    • Altitude
    • Speaker placement

    Maybe it's just me but...

    I think it is psychological.
But, I have noticed that 2way time aligned systems seem to be more consistent at any level.
With multi-ways I always seek the perfect volume that the system sounds just right.

    Good observation!!!
And with the multi-ways, there always is that perfect volume.

    Yup.

If you can get it right with fewer crossover points, all the better.

Is that why my Single Driver augmented always sounds so right? It is a hard worker and does not seem to ever have off nights...

If you are tired it will not sound the same.

Except for the sound of distant road kill a system usually sounds better later at night. Some may argue the mains power has less noise.

From a medical point of view, the human body is much less consistent than any electronic component.

    No the problem is gremilins!!

They are little creatures that sneak in to you components a change them when your not looking!

I agree that our body's are the problem, guess we have to learn to deal with it. John
