4430 Woofer Out - Any Ideas?

When I tried the 4430s in the garage, one of the woofers made no sound. I thought the worse and figured a recone would be in order. But when I put in a good 2235, I still had no sound. I actually look at this as a good thing as it means the woofer probably needs a refoam rather than recone.

I tried it in the bi-amp mode (flipped the switch too) and still nada. Does anyone know of a common occurance/fix for these? In light of that, could someone post the crossover schematic?

I did compare the other one to the L200 cabinet. Sounds good, and quite different. The horn is not nearly as phat and in your face. I'm thinking that it wouldn't sound all that different than the 2420s will sound which seems more characteristic of the 2425 than the LE175 that is now on the H92.

    Probably the switch.

Thanks for the schematic. Wire had come off of pin E14 on the board and I wouldn't have known which pin to put it back on. Lots of pins on that board.

They're singing nicely now. Certainly glad I'm not looking at a woofer recone.

You know about not playing drivers with bad or missing foam bits, so
be careful or it could turn into a recone opportunity

Glad to hear they're working. When I read your post this afternoon, I thought for sure its got to be the switch or a wiring fault. Sometimes it is just that simple. Buy a lottery ticket tonigt!

These are the 2235s out of the 43** clones. They are like new. The horns and drivers weren't even scratched. The drivers will go in the L200 cabinets and I'm trying to locate a third for the center. Anyone?

I have a friend who has an HL91 with LE85 since new he uses for watching TV. No woofer or crossover or anything. I've been trying to get him to part with it for years. Still works fine cause he never turns it up. One day...

Great. Hard to keep track of all the rotating bits.

    Todd,

Are you looking for another cabinet or another 2235, or both?

Actually, I've decided that the long horns give the 2420s the warmth they needed so decided to replace the LE175s. So, I'm looking for a third 2420. I would also like to change the 2402 to 2405's (simple drop in) or maybe 2404s (little more work) while I was at it.

I pulled a 2404 from a caberet and did A/B with the 2402. The 2402 actually goes higher, but the 2404 sounds like it goes higher. This is because the 2402 has a dip in the 8-10Khz range that is not present in the 2404 and this range includes the "sizzle." I thought the dip was due to the crossover until I did these tests. Even though the 2404 seems to peter out sooner, without the dip, it sounds higher and better integrated. The 2402 is about 5 dB more efficient than the 2404.

BTW, I put Stairway to Heaven on and sat Linda down (her favorite song) to listen to the 4430s.

She thought that they were well defined and very clear, but shrill and thin. She prefers the LE175/2402 combination.

Minor adjustments to the L-pads might help... being able to accurately
measure and match both L/R and inter-frequency balance is really helpful
to get the most from these. Not knowing what you've already done, I'd still
imagine their behavior could be improved. Attempting to get them to voice
similar to the other systems or even just leaving the L-pads at "0" is
    probably not optimum.

I'd expect the 4430's to sound a bit more 'laid back' if anything.

Definitely more "laid back" and less "in your face." No horn "honk" at all.
