After switching out components and using various combinations, I think I have the best sound I can get from these speakers using the electronics I currenly have. Until the upgrade bug hits again, I will be content with the following:

Sansui G-8000 used with Onkyo M-508 Grand Integra amp in a bi-amp configuration w/G-8000 on LF and M-508 on top. Sounds odd, eh? But the Sansui actually gives better bass definition than the Onk & the Onk ( with the gain controls adjusted ) delivers sweet highs.

The rest of the system includes a BSR eq ( used only when needed ) and, for now, a Onkyo Integra DX-788F cdp. This cdp was totl in 95/96 and has balanced conections. It was designed to be used with the Onkyo P-388F pre-amp & Onk M-588F amp. The JBL's are great speakers and I am done looking for 'the' speaker for me. Thanks to all for your insights.
