What is your application? What frequency range are you after?

I really like the TAD ET-703 at 8KHz. There are several high efficiency ribbons available >100dB. I haven't tried any of them, but they do look quite promising. The JBL 045Be is also excellent, but it has a rather low efficiency and I doubt that it would be usable that low in frequency.

JBL 2407 or 2408 mated to an OASR "Dr.Seuss" waveguide.

The question was for "Best" not "Good".

As an old Altec guy, I am not familiar with the 2407 or 2408. I am a bit familiar with the 2405. do you have any specs? JIM

JBL has no published specs, but here a good thread on the performance.

Also..."best" can be qualified by value, as well. The TAD costs 3 times more than the 2407....which isn't trivial here.

I suppose, however when someone asks about the best sports car or the best SUV, they typically expect it to cost a bundle.

If we want a top quality bang for the buck option then I'd definitely look at one of the China made ribbon tweeters from Arum Cantus and the others. They sound soooo much better than any of the ring radiators. The S3 which has a sensitivity rating of 100dB/watt/m is currently on sale for $250 at PE. That's almost $900 per channel cheaper than the TAD.

    Actually,

I am getting an NOS 2405, was wondering how it stacked up against the new ones. JIM

    That's an entirely different question.

JBL doesn't really make anything quite like that anymore. They would be too expensive. Not as expensive as the TADs, but much more than the market would bare.

The 2405 is fine. I would not use it below 10KHz though. It tends to sound really harsh at lower frequencies. If your ears are dull you might not mind though. There are quite a few L65 fans about and they like the 077 (2405) crossed over quite low as it is in that system.

Personally for me I like the E-V T350s. The factory crossover is 3.5Khz, but I use 7KHz using an Altec 806/811 combo for mid-range.

You can buy 10 of them for ~$680 per. We could do a group buy.
