Is my B380 just JUNK with some 4344's?

Inspired by this forum I have just imbarked on a project to build a pair of 4344 monitors.

I have started to purchase transducers but wonder about my current sub woofer - does it have a future life in my lounge? If not it can be sold for 4344 parts funding.

Would a B380 (with a BX63A dividing summing network) actually add any value to a pair of 4344's biamped or would it just muddy the overall basslines?

    thanks, Jarrod

I would be inclined to pull the 2235H out of the B380 and use it in one of the 4344's.

Get one of the 1500 SUB drivers and toss it in your B380 box for extended VLF.

    DOH !!

as he sits here searching the globe for a pair of excellent condition 2235H's for his 4344 project; only to find he has one already sitting in his lounge room....

i guess that just highlights the difference between a guru and a novice like me... thanks for the great advice Giskard.

    regards,
    Jarrod

    Hello Jarrods

What's your time frame look like?? I will be doing the same over the spring and summer. Nice to have some company. Ians thread will certainly be a big help. Especially with the driver spacing and those pesky tapped inductors.

Ian went with tapped autotransformers instead of my solution for them?

    Hello Giskard

No he used your rather clever alternate solution. He sent me a copy so I can use it too.

    Thanks

Well it should be better than the tapped autotransformers. G.T. sent me the voltage drives to model the alternates from as well as a few test cores. During the course of one conversation it was mentioned that tapped autotransformers had long ago fallen from grace. He couldn't even remember how to calculate them. I started with the 4355 and then ended up doing the 4344/4345 and L300/4333. They all took quite a bit of time... I'll never do it again

    Yeah,

They work extremely well using air cores.

I am happy to assist anyone who needs to replicate the 4345 network.

    Question crossover frequency

So when I finish the 4344's what frequency should their LF be cut off at and the Sub1500 (in the B380 box, Crown K2) come in at?

i hope to use a dbx DriveRack Studio crossover.

    thanks, Jarrod

    Re: crossover frequency

Use whatever frequency sounds the best in your listening room. If you use 2235H's in your 4344's then you might find you cross over lower than you would if you were using 2234H's. You might consider using 2234H's and gain the efficiency and transient response since you won't need the added extension of the 2235H's with the 1500 SUB around.

If you find out that you dont`t need a sub after all, I would be very interested in your BX63a. I have the B460 that I love it, but would like to replace my Bx63 with a Bx63A

And I would like the older BX63 so I can build a B212 filter out of it

Of course. It would be a pleasure to sell it to you.
But I can not do that before I get a bx63a myself.
