    A7 Crossover

Have decided to build a pair of A7's. 416-8B's / 802-8G Drivers with 511B Horns. Have SAE A202 & A502 Amps and Hafler DH101 Preamp. Thinking about using N501-8A Crossover. Is there much to be gained from biamping? If so, what is a crossover recommendation?

There's no HF compensation in N501-8A:

    802-8Gs need it:

What is the intended application for the A7s?

    A7's

Mostly home stereo. I guess what I'm asking, is can I get away with a single amp with the N501 crossover and perhaps some equalization, or is there a physical filter required as well. Just pondering the idea of biamping, I'm not familiar with any electronic crossovers (or any other kind of crossover for that matter) needed in a biamp situation. The only A7's I've heard had the components described above, in a single amp application (stock N501 crossover) and I just couldn't get enough of the BIG sound. Just wondering if there's much to be gained biamping them.

For those large systems and the low cost of active crossover Bi amping is a big improvement in sound quality over passive networks. You can buy a Behringer set for 274$ . What it does best is it gives you increase Dynamic range less distortion. But again it requires an extra amp. The A-7 crossover is simple 12 Db second order butterworth. You adjust the EQ to your liking or living quarters.

Does Behringer have a model with RCA Jacks?

The Behringer unit is Balanced XLR in and out. Your units are not balanced so would require some sort of box to transform unbalanced to a balanced signal.

These units cost about 30$ to 60$ each .

Mine works fine with the proper cables, RCA to XLR.

Some people have problems mixing balanced pro and unbalanced consumer gear. That hasn't been my experience, but perhaps it is because all of the amps are balanced; it's only the source, i.e., the input to the crossover, which is not.... :dont-know

Thanks Zilch. I should have known that. I've used XLR to 1/4" phono before.

Zilch You're right no need for fancy gain box. Just XLR to phone adapter is required.

Sorry about that but with all the patch bay, splitters, DI box impedance matcher; one can get off track once in a while.

It may well be that other measures will ultimately be necessary; as I say, some people have problems with different setups. But, as YOU say, there are available options for resolving those issues, if they arise, and it should not be seen as a deterrent to what might otherwise be a workable system configuration.

    Crossovers

Well after weighing all the options, I've ordered an Ashly XR-1001. Don't plan on using a sub (nor do I have the space with the A7's) so a 2 way stereo should be all I need. May have to cry for help when everything arrives! Thanks for all the advice.
