Question: The best 2220 enclosure - horn preferred

Hi all,

I do own a 2220H and I wanted to use it for a (mono) sub in a private setup for a (bigger) terrace.

There is no HiFi quality needed (it is outside anyhow), but I want to have a setup based on a good bass fundament.

I did unfortunately not find any good information on:

- is that speaker a good one for a horn sub?
- if so, WHICH horn to use

Any comments & links highly appreciated.

Durch meine Modifikation hat das Horn sehr viele Töne im mittleren Tonbereich, so dass man im Garten mit einem Piezo Mitteltonhorn auskommen könnte.

Personal experience says a C55 will run with one 15, and it's no slouch as far as horn enclosures go. Don't build it out of MDF. Too fragile, too heavy. It runs circles around C40, C34 etc. Most front loaded horns are for efficiency as opposed to extended bass. C55's are hard to beat unless your title has transportation in it. It was designed for a pair of 15's but I've run it on one. Itwould probably run with the right 12 (D131).

Juergen your 2220H is quite suitable for horn subwoofer duty, especially if used on a long, slow flare bass horn. In this instance the horn loading dominates over the driver characteristics and good output can be had to well below the driver's usual resonant frequency.

You can find publications from the early 50's where a guy basically buys the house next door and turned it into his woofer horn. I think they may have worried a bit less about phase alignment in those days. Today if you have room for an enclosure the size of a 61 inch projection television then a lot can be said for a C55 if you like horns. The horn comes in right where the speaker starts to need it. When I ran one with one driver it was temporary so we didn't modify anything except block off one hole. With some experimenting you might even do better. If that's to big, leave base horns alone. Physics is not on your side.
