    Question L300's maybe?

I have threatened for years to build a pair of really nice JBL's. I like Classical and Blues so I need compatable spkrs. I don't think I will find them around this small town and will not go thru a shipping process lwith those cabs so building them is the only solution. I wouldn't mind doing up a pair of 4350's but think the cost and scarcity of componets is the down side. Are the L300;s good for what I listen to? Sometimes I like LOUD. What componets do I need?

BTW I have two D140-F's if anyone is interested.

    Welcome to the forum.
Building a system yourself is a great way to go. There are lots of good ideas/designs here to get you going.
One method of trying things out to discover what you like best would be to start with a nice 15" bass cabinet. Find a horn and try out a "quick and dirty" 2-way. If that doesn't seem to mesh with the music you listen too change it to a 3-way, like what paragon has here:

The L 300 is a great choice for the music you like and you will not be disappointed. You might also consider something along the lines of Altec Model 19s for your build project. Think the bare components of the Altecs would be easier to locate.

I made these 19 clones and could not be happier as they now fit the wifes decore and my listening pleasures.

I didn't think about those but your right, a pair of 19's would be pretty nice. What componets do they use?

I think there are a couple of variations but mine have 416-8B LFs, 802-8G HFs on 811B horns and 19/1200Hz XOs.

For my clones I used a 416-8A LF, 802-8G/811B and I bought the new Altec N1500 8A XO.

I think the stock 19s sound a bit better and have better lows but they just don't fit in the LR at all and the Walnut cabinets are a direct contrast to all the oak furniture I made for the room.

You won't be disappointed with the 19s or a clone variation either. Port tuning is critical and I still don't have it right simply because my ears don't know what right is. They do sound great to me but I would expect others to do some finer tuning.

I would gladly save you alot of work and trade them for the Cuda!!

Hummmmmm, you wouldn't like the Cuda. Those 6+ cars suck gas like no tomorrow and they are faster than greased Owl poop. I would feel bad getting you into trouble.

I don't see those componets around too much but then again I know very little about Altec. Where is a good place to look for them?

I will buy the fuel! This is my buddy at Watkins Glenn Driving school.

Best place to find the parts would probably be the auctions and then I would send them to GPA for rebuild.

I don't really know the L 300s but a pal had the L 200s and they were quite a nice speaker so I think the 300s would have to be every bit as nice or better.

I just think finding JBL components might prove a bit tougher and more costly but I have no idea if they are all that much better in the end result.

From the JBL stable I think you would be happier with the 250Ti or perhaps the XPL series. Several members have created DIY versions of them both. None of these direct radiator systems are capable of quite the SPL of the L300, and certainly won't get close to the 4350 in terms of maximum SPL... but they have a tonal balance that is typically more favored by classical music listeners and are less up front sounding... the JBL horns can put the violins unrealistically out in front of the rest of the orchestra.

BTW: I'd take the 'Cuda over the L300s too.
