Have decided to go with a different pair of JBLs that can be single amplified.
Thanks for the replies.
Is it possible for the 4355 to be used with a single amplifier (McIntosh MA9000 capable of driving 2 ohm loads) by using (an) external passive crossover(s)? An active crossover would require an...
Thanks again gents.
The Altec 14 Mantaray is the horn works well for me with all types of musical material. Some Altec experts I've spoken with even felt it compared favorably with the revered...

Final Chapter: Grilles
After searching eBay daily, I struck gold when one lucky day, an eBay seller had a set of (4) Altec 14 grilles....
Thanks grumpy. Here are the finished speakers.
The holes are barely noticeable now. I'm very pleased how they turned out.
The repaired holes and a quick shot of the electronics.
Here is my restoration of these Altec 14s I just purchased.
I recently purchased them from a young man who had saved them from being scrapped: They had originally been installed in the auditorium...
Nevermind - I just spoke with Great Plains who confirmed the green lead is definitely positive.
Thanks.
Perhaps this may help shed some light.
Post 8 shows the crossover; Post 11 shows the schematic for the 14's crossover (Original version crossover, there were 3)

Nobody?
Well, I'm just going to do the logical thing for now and connect the green to the (+) and the black to the (-) unless someone who knows better says otherwise.
Could anybody tell me which lead goes to which terminal on the woofers? There are green and black wires - which goes to + and -? Somebody marked the woofer lead with a ballpoint pen + and - which...
Thanks kindly for the suggestions fellas.
I had been in touch with Great Plains but to no avail. He said they'd not be easy to find.
Believe it or not, the young man from whom I bought the...
I recently acquired a pair of Altec Model Fourteens which unfortunately have their grilles missing.
Any suggestions for obtaining replacements would be much appreciated.
Thanks.
Thanks for the suggestion, fpitas.
I spoke with the gentleman from Great Plains this morning.
The bottom line is that there is nothing he can do in this case and that the response...
I'm running a pair of Heathkit AS 21 with McIntosh C30 preamplifier and MC 240 tube amplifier or MC 2505 SS amplifier.
The problem is that the EQ in the preamplifier must be set as follows in...
Thanks for the clarification. It just seems to defy logic, nontheless - (to my simple mind anyway LOL!).
*My "experiment" came about as a result of noticing air pulsating from the rear port of a...
The same driver in a sealed cabinet will have more cone movement than the same in a ported cabinet?
I tread lightly here but whenever I was able to use my hand to seal a port up, woofer cone...
Dave is a very knowledgeable collector - and without his council, I would not be the owner of these speakers today. :applaud:
I just noticed the rear panel is also lined with insulation as well-...
Congrats closdeducs. I've been enjoying mine- even with the mid-80s receiver. They're my first horn type speakers and can easily see why the design is well regarded.
As to grille covering...
Our placement options were limited for our subjective demos- all speakers we tried had to be placed near the center of the demo room.
Unfortunately there were no K2s present to audition. Others...
We tried them with both current model McIntosh MC 402 and vintage MC 240.
No offence intended towards any partisans or owners of the S4700- they simply left us feeling rather disappointed....
Only yesterday a group of 4 of us spent some time in a high end audio shop evaluating a number of different speakers. They pretty much gave us the liberty of trying out whatever we wanted - as long...
Thanks for the welcome and the kind words.
The speakers came with a McIntosh receiver which I've sent out for refreshing. For the time being I'm running them with a late-80s receiver I pulled out...
