I think a lot of people feel that way. If I get a pair of drivers with the white (or yellow by now) Lansaloy surround intact (hard as a rock, but no crack), I will list it for sale as is for the...

    LOL, Probably!

I think the best upgrade for the L200 is the L300. Addition of the 077 for that extended highs your looking for and a completely new crossover design, the N333. With those you can...

I have a client who has a pair of LX16 and LX16A crossovers. He wanted to rebuild a pair for his L200s. His mother was the original owner, they are original with the LE15B, 8 ohms and the LE85, 16...

That would indicate 6 dB down at the actual crossover, intersection point of about 1850 Hz, 3 dB more that what is desired at that point.
So it seems there would be about a 3 dB dip in the response...

Brining this thread back to life.

So, if the LX16A was modified for a higher crossover point at the high end (to protect the LE85) and nothing was done to the low end circuitry, wouldn't you end...

I think you may have solved it. They sort of look the same.
I'm going to take this one apart assuming this is a multi-tapped resistor and draw up a schematic.

Once that is done I'll post and we...

  8. Is this a Multi-tap resistor in an older N1200 crossover?

I have not yet taken this N1200 crossover apart, so, am unable to put a meter on this component but wanted to make sure it is what I think it is!

It looks like 2 separate resistor windings, one...

That is absolutely beautiful. I did a dual master cylinder conversion and installed the knock of kit on a 64 with the 427 tri-power years ago for a friend. I think the was the coolest (and most...

  11. Broken corners on JBL crossovers? No problem!

Well, not exactly. This was way too much work. It's probably easier to purchase a replacement crossover! Anyways, I wanted to see if it could be done.

-Build up the broken corner with an aluminum...

That was my plan. I have replaced all the caps with film caps, resistors with non-inductive type, replaced the 6 mH iron core coil with an air core version and replaced the rotary switch. The only...

LOL. A friend of mine has a 70 Hemicuda. At 425 HP we thought that was the fastest, wildest ride back in '83. He now also has a 2016 Viper with 640 HP. It's twice the ride, comfortable, has A/C and...

Good point. I was hoping I could improve on the sound with an air core for the autoformer and eliminate saturation / distortion.
Really, I think I got a little obsessed with the idea of an air core...

The goal is to maintain a museum piece. The key word being "Maintain". I want to use the crossover and have it perform as it did when it left the factory.
Think of it like a vintage 64 Corvette....

    Hi Ian,

Thanks for running the simulation, at least I know it wasn't a mistake on my part. For this project, I was trying to to rebuild the LX5 but keep it as original as possible. Same design,...
  17. I Made an Air Core Autoformer for the LX5 .... and it didn't work

I used 18 gauge wire to wind (I was hoping to get the DCR between taps a little closer to the original iron core version)
I got the inductance at the taps pretty close to the original JBL LX5...

Thanks, that's good to know. I may give it a try the next time I run across hard surrounds.

    Thanks,

I've heard of this trick but was always told it was a bad idea. This is the first thread I've seen of someone who has actually done it.

How do your speakers look now, 13 years later? Has the brake fluid had any sort of adverse effects on the surrounds?

The prices did seem high. Unfortunately there is no source for that literature. Maybe it was a dealer reselling at inflated prices.
Maybe they had an item similar to the 375 they offered that was...

  24. 375 Dynimium Driver?? Anyone know anything about this?

I got a piece of JBL literature from member "ronwilk" that shows a 375 driver in 2 configurations and prices. One is the Alnico version at 32 lbs. at $525. The other is a Dynimium version at 11 lbs....

I wonder if the "stuff" the Altecs are potted in is different than the JBLs. Do you have any pictures of the pieces you got out of your Altecs?
