Active or Passive for 844a's

Hi Folks,

New to Altec and forum. I purchased a pair of good condition 844a's a few months ago. 2x12 and horn, all original alnico drivers. I want to either upgrade the crossover with Werner's passives (with tweeter autoformers) or go active with my Marchand XM6 which has adjustable 24db/oct filters and adjustable 'damping' for the knee area at the crossover point.

My first impulse is to go active and hear how it works out.

Any impressions, experiences or inclinations?
