I'm looking to replace my Altec 604E/620 with smaller speakers, I believe I have narrowed it down to one of the 3way 10's. First choice is the L96, with the 4313 or L110 as alternates. I could also consider the L112/4312A if its all that much better.

My application calls for them to be placed fairly high in the room on bookshelves place horizontal. I will be driving them with a McIntosh MC240 tube amplifier. I listen to all types of music, but primarily classic rock.

Ane recommendations from the experts???

I'm a big fan of the 4313Bs over any of the others. I like the L96s also. But trust me you got to hear for yourself, you may like the others better. You would get many varying opinions.

I ain't no expert - only a mere user.

Anything with a "43" in front of it is always first choice. If you HAVE the 4313B's, you really can't do much better, IMO.

Anything "44" not bad either... ;)

In 20 years or so of playing around with older JBL's these three systems are among my favorite. MC240's have a sort of bloated bottom end that would be complemented by the tightness of these speakers very well. I think these would be a better match for your MC240 than any of the older 12" JBL bookshelf speakers. I have a pair of L96's now but sometimes I think that the L110's that I used to own sounded more natural. I used to run the L110's on an various Mac tube amps and the sound was amazing.

My respect for the 4313B should be legendary by now. :p
I put the grille neatly to the side and snapped this photo this morning.

The L96 running the 3113B "works" too, as does the L96 running the N110A. I prefer the 3113B network for DVD movie playback. At one point I had a pair of custom L96's that used the bi-amp switch from the 4333B to switch between the N110A and 3113B filters. Complicated but fully functional. Why I didn't take a photo of those rather spectacular networks is beyond me! They ended up on the 3113B setting 90% of the time. The N110A was a nice network though!

Don't waste your time on anything less than a charge-coupled version of these networks.

Actually, your respect for many things JBL is legendary. Heck, you're even being quoted in eBay auctions these days! :p

Anything with a "43" in front of it is always first choice ? Some people don't like my 4312, they say, they are not linear, a peak by 65 Hz, only 45 - 15000 Hz... I love them. I have a pair of 4312 and a pair of L112. I have problems with the room acoustic; the 4312 sound is better in my small guest room, the L112 sounds better in my great room. In past I had a pair of L96, I think they are difficulter to refoam, cause they have only a very small sicke
