I thought Iread somewhere this could be done? Can anyone verify this?

Yes you can as long as the Collector to Emitter voltage doesn't exceed 40-50 Volts. A sure bet would be an MPSA42, great high voltage general purpose transistor. I got a million of either one in my basement, let me know and I can send you some with a "Canadian Returnee" discount of No charge.l

Now thats funny...
Let me check those specs.....thanks.
Lists Maximums as:
Collector - Emitter Voltage 40
So it should be OK
Turns out I have some MPSA42's as well.
