View Full Version : Is it the name or the power supply and output section??

We accredit certain brands of amps with certain qualities... For example Crown being good for subbass etc. But is it not the stiffness of the power supply (PS) that is important? The size/ quality of the power transformer, amount of filter capacitance and its ability to discharge and charge quickly. Other factor is the ability of the output transistors to discharge this current. This is related to their type and number.

It is said that the newer light hi efficiency amps with small modern PS do poorly in subbass use... "they can not pull energy out of the AC line fast enough as opposed to the heavy amps that have energy stored in the transformer and caps etc. Any comments or experienced opinions appreciated.

Lightweight transient amplifiers do poorly on sub bass because all though they are fast, they arent heavy duty enough in their PS and filter storage! Its kinda like trying to use a Toyota Tacoma pickup to haul a 15,000lb trailer!

Big PS and caps with rugged output transistors and MANY of them is what does the job!
