What mids do you guys consider to be the BEST OF THE BEST??

I know this is completely a matter of opinion for most, but I personally think none are better than the LE5-6/8/10/12's.

What are differences between these and the "updated" version of these, the 104H's? Not to mention the difference between them and the LE5-2?

Honestly, IMO the 904TI 4" mid is without peer in the JBL midrange stable. The 093TI three-incher is pretty darn good, too, as it was the first TI midrange to convince me that TI has a place outside the tweeter.

I also like the 704G and 104H. I'd have to say the LE5 family is a bit long in the tooth for my tastes, though some are better than others.

But so much of it depends on what you like.

My vote would be the LE375, smooth, explosive, dynamic and

Effort for less.

Blew away my 2445 and LE85 must be augmented with a super tweeter of your choice.

Ti Dome - What are the dimensions of the 904TI? Will they fit in a cut out for a LE5/104?

I can't verify that right now, but my knowledge will increase over the holidays
as my son and I try some driver and crossover swaps/mods as I contemplate the PT1400 and L9 variants I'm working on.

I knew that money I sunk into sending him to DeVry Institute in Chicago would pay off some day. :p

Search for the LE-5 Matrix and your bound to see comparisons of them all. The 104H has the widest bandwidth and best response. They are also the newest model and most available. The 5-2 are the oldest and probably the least favorite because of age. Some of them are starting to fail at the voice coil diaphram glue joint.

IMHO if your using a 2214H a 104H is a good match because they can cross at 800 hz with no problem. The upper response is also controlled.
375 series is a very expensive proposition nowadays. ePay has driven the prices on those drivers to the moon.

Yes, but where do you find them or even information on them? These aren't even included in the on-line literature. I was considering putting a 4" lower midrange in one of the 4" ports on my L200 cabinets and this could be a likely candidate.

But they're usually available here:

http://jbl.com/home/product_support/jblparts.aspx?prodId=PT800BLK

Considering I paid $50 for a pair of very nice 104H-2s just a couple of weeks ago, the 904TIs are steep at about $250 a pair. However, they're much nicer than the 104H-2s, too.

As for information, I'll bet Giskard's done some testing on Mike's, but it'd be up to him to share it or not. (It'd sure save me some time if he did. (Nod, nod, wink, wink. ;) )

Right now I've got two 908TIs, two 904TIs, two of the Audax tweeters, and two crossover networks that I'm rather liberally moving around just to see what happens. Later this winter, I'll try to have some semblance of a report on it all.

I'm still a big fan of the LE5-2. There's just something about the AlNico moters that just sound right to my ears. I have four LE5-2's that I have re-coned, and they will be going in my studio with a pair of 2214H's. I'm still not sure what to use on the high's, but I will figure it out soon.

Cheers,
Zach

I use a slot on top of an LE5-2. While I'm satisfied with the sound, a 2404 mini biradial tweet @ 4K may be better suited as you lessen the rather harsh top end of the 5-2.
Either driver will work and they need to be compression loaded to keep up with those, (what I call) screaming mids, so the crossover in these combinations is crucial. If the application is 'studio' as you say, go electronic. MO. 24db/octave Linkwitz Riley filter.
I also like the 2214H in combination with the above drivers. It has pretty good impact that you can feel.

What I want to know is what makes the 104H-2's and LE5-2's better than the LE5-6/8/10/12's. This seems to be the overwhelming concensus regarding these "vintage" mids/ I am lookig to reproduce what I heard when I replaced the L100 mids and tweeters with the L36 mids and tweeters, which to this day are the best sounding JBL bookshelf speakers I have heard, has anyone tried this configuration? I have JBL LN3's, please see my other thread,

http://audioheritage.org/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=8038

and have the opportunity to use the absolute best drivers. Currently they are cut for nearly any (round) 12" JBL woofer, 5" mid, and the 077/075 tweeters which I believe is the same opening as the LE25-4's from the L36/

Hey Nightbrace -- I wanted to respond to a different thread, but I couldn't find it and the search function didn't help at all, so this will work. It took me a while to make a decision and move on it, but I finally got a pair of like new 104H-2s off ePay for about $50. I checked the phase, hooked them up and put them in. They sound pretty much like the LE5-2s, but, and I mean a big:moon: , there are some interesting differences. The first thing I noticed was that there seemed to be more happening in the midrange, things that I hadn't heard before. Next, the rough edges of the LE5-2s were gone, the upper mids seemed smoother. Overall, the sound was somewhat warmer after I got them sufficiently dialed in. Also, they seem to take it in the same direction as the charge coupled crossovers I made for them, but they take it further out there.

As you know, the real test with this stuff is in extended listening. This is just a first impression. Will be back in a few weeks when I've listened to them the way I use them for a while.

2441 / 2311 / 2308 over here so far. I'm holding my breath, though, as far as the 4345 line-up is concerned. It should be interesting:p

It's never been easy for me to go to sleep, so I like to load up the carousel with some classical music or some old Genisis. Listening to this stuff on my L100s helps me pass the night pleasantly. Last night was Genisis. I rolled over and hit the remote and the improvement in the sound was amazing. I don't know why I didn't pick up on the extent of the qualatative differences earlier. I never heard a better cone mid-range than the 104H-2. Nothing in the LE series is even close to these things. I still feel like I'm listening to L100s, but this is something you just need to hear. I don't even know how to describe it. I'm almost disappointed when I do sleep and miss a favorite tune.
