I would like to know the difference between a line stage and a preamplifier .
ex : audio research ls and sp !

I'm sure someone else here can give you a more in depth answer, but to me the line level preamp adds gain to all input devices whereas a full function preamp has an extra phono input (stage) that adds gain & RIAA equalization necessary to track an LP correctly.

I'll second that. I have owned ARC LS1, couple SP9MkII's and SP14. IIRC the LS1 was quite same as SP9, but without phonostage.
