After several less than impressive attempts at upgrading my system from an Eminence 1" CD to something better, I've finally got a listen to what I think endears listeners to a good horn system.
A while back Giskard sold me a set of 2421 diaphrams to try out in a pair of 2470 JBL cd's I had found locally. Using the 2470's on the 2345 horns they came with on several different passive XO configerations yeilded poor to painful results, regardless of diaphram or xo combo used.
I finally pulled one the Eminence H290 Bi-Radials out of one of my 4Pi 2ways bolted the 2470 on it (after hogging out the flare so the bolts would actually fit!!!!!) hooked it up using an 525 Urei Xo and fired it all up.
Right off it was obvious Eminence is a bit generous with their stated output numbers as the JBL was a far bit hotter even thought they have supposedly the same output. A quick adjustment on the XO (gotta love active crossovers) and all was well. Actually better than well, it was fantastic. All the hiss and spit and raw edgiess (sp) that had reduced my music collection to 2 CD's was gone. Clarity, sweetness of tone, authority and increased detail were filling the room in magnificent Mono.

The whole Mono mess. Next step is building proper cabinets incorporating the 2235's, 2123's and the 2470/2421's either triamped or biamped with a passive on the top.
I still can't get over how much better the system sounds with out the snap, crack and pop from the Eminence CD's. Also listening fatigue is gone, the aluminum diaphrams are certainly living up to their reputation for being smooth.

Just a comparison, for reference.
And it's a door stop and precision musical reproduction device.
not a HOCKEY puck and a curling stone.
