I showed the first set to m'lady, saying, you need to know how lucky you are. She said, "I could take some pictures myself."

There is always one guy beyond yourself who's passed justifiable or reason. That's why it's called an obession.

Gee, I wish I had the money he has spent. :)

Actually, I've seen that site before, and, as impressesd as I am, I keep thinking, "If he can afford all that gear, why can't he buy a decent chair?"

:dont-know

I was wondering why he had the airconditioning vents in his speakers? Maybe those are actually a pair of refridgerators.

[Wonders who made the little multi-cell horn tweeters he's got there....]

That is an Altec. The one used in the 12" coax 601 and also the 602 coax. I have a 12" 601 and that tweeter sounds mighty fine.

Probably because they are Klangfilm Eurodyn's with the diffuser plates fitted. I've seen just the plates sell for L300 prices and the Eurodyn's go for as much as Hartsfield's. They may not be JBL but there's a reason those shown in the photo have been given pride of place above all the others in his collection..... they are considered by many to be the best speakers ever built.

The chair may actually be worth more than any of the speakers.

Actually with all that vintage gear in there, I'm sure the rooms have a distinct, dominant smell from the equipment and the aging wood.

In fact, for me, one deterrent for having some of the larger, older, vintage gear is that my GF would absolutely not permit the "old" smell in the house. I can't imagine...

Hi guys,

That little Altec tweeter used a diaphragm that began life in a Western Electric microphone. When Altec began manufacturing several of the W.E. mic designs in 1950, they no doubt received the tooling for the diaphragm. Someone must have said "Gee, this might make a fine tweeter." They do sound very good, but will not handle much power.

To me the exciting thing about the conglomeration of speaker parts in Zilch's picture is that the main speaker is a Lansing 500B Monitor! His pair appears to have been made in the Altec era, probably early 1940s. The high frequency driver is a 287, the woofer perhaps a 415. I have seen pictures of a couple of monitors of this style, with the spacious top enclosure and large rectangular cutout on the front baffle. It looks like this was done to allow the use of different multicellular horns, depending on the application.

Jim Lansing stated in one of his articles that the Monitors were sold in large numbers to the U.S. Armed Forces. They must have all been shipped overseas and stayed there, as they hardly ever show up in the U.S.

Those large horns sitting on top are mid 1940s RCA wooden p.a. horns, BTW. They look very out of place on the Lansings.

Here are more pics of this fellow's Monitors...

Nice 10B Tuner, it is a shame that it is useless in Japan.

Goes to show that for the owner it is more the acquisition of the item than it's usefulness.
