I have a pair of 4412 Studio monitors on top of a pair of 4645B and I think it sounds totally amazing. I also have a pair of 2123h 2445j with 2390 horns and lenses and 2405h tweeters.
Now my question is,would it sound even better if I put those drivers in a box on top of the 4645B than having the 4412 as top speakers ?
Im thinking that it would be more similar to the 4345/4350 Studio monitors since it would be 18” bass 10” midrange 2” compression horn and 2405 tweeter. Or would it just sound more like a PA system?
Im running two amps one for the subs and one for the 4412s and I have a dbx driverack 2

Hi Amon,

What distinguish control monitors is often their "doctored" response for flatness across the range and the coverage pattern control. The planned box on top of 4645 won't be a homogeneous control monitor. e.g. 2390 horn dispersion pattern is not necessarily the same as others, plus the mid and tweeter used are different.

Will it sound better is somewhat subjective based on individuals listening preferences. More similar to the 4345/4350? I doubt since they're made of a lot of things, put together in a certain way, add to this the crossover work involved in monitors to make them sound as they do.

Might sound more like a PA system but a "civilised" one if you do things correctly. Personnaly, i would try it since i tend to like different sounding speakers. And you still have the pair of 4412 for when you want a more "massaged" sound.

The 4412 is a relatively low efficiency monitor and this ultimately impacts on its ability to reproduce the recording at the original levels.

The 4645B, the 2123H and a suitably horn and driver for high quality sound re production and the slot will recreate a bigger sense of scale when correctly set up with an active crossover. Have a look at the Drew Daniels system in the Library for some ideas on how to go about it.
