Hi all, I am trying to purchase a pair of JBL 2453-SL drivers for my 2384 horns.
JBL has stopped making them? So I am wondering as the title suggests is it possible to use a 2453j driiver and replace the 2453j diaphragm with a new JBL D8R2453-SL diaphragm.
If so would it make it to spec as a JBL 2453-SL, all things considered the motor should be identical.

Thanks in advance OB-1

You should be able to just swap the caps.

Rob:)

Thanks Rob, that was my assumption.

It would be great to hear from someone if they have tried it and it worked.

I just did the same thing a few days ago but did find the results a bit disappointing. I probably did something wrong but the original 2453J measured better than with the brand new 2453H-SL diaphragm.

My 2384s came with 2430 drivers originally. Maybe you have to use a spacer with these newer design compression drivers, I don't know.

I thoroughly cleaned the magnetic gap with sticky tape and compressed air before mounting the new diaphgram. Also I carefully screwed down the back cap while playing test tones and looking at a spectrum analyzer minimizing distortion products. So I think I didn't screw it up too bad.

Here are the frequency responses of all three drivers. I offset the curves so you can see better but they were all measured approx. at the same output level. Green is the 2430, red the 2453J and blue the 2453H-SL. 1/24 oct smoothing.

And here are the REW distortion figures. Don't know how meaningful these are but you can clearly see the 2430 struggling more than the other two. The 2453J seems to be the most comfortable below 800 Hz. From top to bottom 2430, 2453J, 2453H-SL.
