View Full Version : JBL 2020h or JBL 2023H on straight 70hz horn?

Been planning the next horn since I sold my Edgar 80hz horns. The said two drivers are my candidates, so far. I see that 2023h has sharply rising distortion below 120hz. Is this the case for 2020h as well?
Maybe there's a better 12" driver for this?
Thanks,
Herman

Hello Herman;

The 2023H has 0.300” longer voice coil than the 2020H (0.900” verses 0.600”) and is better suited for higher excursion / lower frequency use. At domestic listening levels, especially horn loaded, the excursion is likely to be so low that the 2020H, with a higher percentage of its coil in the gap, may outperform it.

Just curious, what will be used below this new horn?

Barry.

Barry,

I currently use a pair of 18" Aura RS-8.1 ported subs to cover 60hz and down. May try some small tapped horns down the road.

Thanks for responding. What accounts for the sharply increasing harmonic distortion of the 2023h below 120hz? Is this audible and perhaps the 2020h does the same? Couldn't find measurements of that driver. Since I plan to use the midbass horn 70hz and up, are there better drivers for this application than the ones I mentioned? I had the Edgar horn with a 15" EV driver, I wanted to try a larger horn but using a nice 12" for a change....

Hello Herman;

Sorry to be so slow.

Looking at several of the JBL 12” drivers with harmonic distortion being a principal concern it is nearly impossible to really tell if the 2023 is much different than the others.

Looking at what you have probably already seen:

The 2023 was measured at the highest voltage of those that I can find at 28.3V or about 100W with 3rd being down only about 15dB around 70 Hz.

The 2020 is about 20dB down at about 70 but was measured at 15V

The 2206 is about 35dB down at about 70Hz and was measured at 19V

The ME120 is way down about 40dB at about 70 Hz and was measured at 20V

The 1200Fe is also way down but measured at only 8V

Interestingly the moving mass is from lightest to highest in this list order. The additional cone mass might clean some of the higher harmonics up. ?

I have run nearly every 12” driver JBL makes in midbass midrange horns and the 2020H is my absolute JBL favorite. I don’t run them as low as you are planning and the 2023H may be an even better driver for what you are planning. It’s light with a pretty good motor and will be very transparent.

If you are going to really be mean to it, use a 2206. If it’s for home use, I think you will love the 2023H.

I want to know how you go. :)

Barry.
