View Full Version : Revel Salon 1: 4" Midrange Problems

Purchased a pair of the original Revel Salons in 2003.

One of the 4" midranges has decided to quit.

Revel / Harman / Arcam have told me the Salons are so "obsolete", the titanium midrange is not available from any of their suppliers.

They suggested I speak with George Meyer in Santa Monica - I'm in Las Vegas - to see if they might be able to "repair" the midrange.

Happy to talk to them, as Morris at GM and I have worked together before.

2 questions:

1) Are these midranges, in fact, repairable?

2) What other "aftermarket" midranges might be "similar" to the Revel Salon?

Hard to believe there is nothing available through Revel / Harman / Arcam.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Revel / Harman / Arcam have told me the Salons are so "obsolete", the titanium midrange is not available from any of their suppliers. While I must say I am not surprised to hear this, it is very disappointing. As a dealer, I can no longer recommend any products from Harman as they have truly lost their way. JBL (Revel is simply a branding exercise as JBL had lost its sheen in the ‘90s) used to warranty their speakers for five years, but supported them for decades and decades. In the late ‘70s a young and stupid Mr. Widget blew a pair of 15 year old LE85s. I sent them to JBL for repair and they repaired them at no cost and returned them to me with a note suggesting I be more careful.

I am not sure about the likelihood of repairing these drivers, but you might also reach out to Forum member Edgewound as he may have experience with these drivers.

Have you inspected the lead in wires , you might just be lucky , unusual but possible.
Also stick a meter across it see if there is any ohms at all. most likely open circuit though. Another possibility could be something in the network has gone open either physically or electronicaly.

Last question , have they been driven hard ?

First, thanks to Macaroonie and Mr. Widget for the comments.

Here's the latest.

A local Revel dealer - whatever that now means - came by, unsoldered the midrange and sent it to George Meyer in LA.

In the meantime, I've found what appear to be conflicting possibilities for replacement.

First is this offering on EBay:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Revel-Speaker-Ultima-Series-1-Midrange-Driver-Model-4H-8-Ohms-NEW/113735446020?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649

Second is this offering on The Speaker Exchange:

https://reconingspeakers.com/product/revel-4g-midrange-n333962-002/

The part number on TSE listing matches the part number I received when I contacted Revel/Harman/Arcam, and says 4G.

The one on EBay looks just like mine, and says 4H.

Once again, I thank you in advance for any additional help.

I miss my Revels !

Cheers,
cmasia

Dear sir i have same issue. i found two options one is also scanpeak medium 12cm it is a little bit smaller
but it should be ok with similar characteristic. do you know reference you are looking for ?
Second option is easier because you have speaker midrange 125 mm who can replace your revel.
its exactly the same size and characteristic. please contact me in one to one and i will give you reference.
i m looking for 2 to replace my midrange who have been repaired.
regards

I realize this is a couple of years old but I have the same problem and so far was unable to get a response about repairing the speaker. Does anyone know if there is in fact a 125mm speaker that I can purchase to replace it? I am a little worried about purchasing something that simply won't fit into the opening or lineup with the retaining screw holes. Appreciate the help.

Since you are in New York I suggest you contact United Radio. They perform factory service for Harman and should be able to get you a suitable replacement driver… if one exists.
