I bought a pair of 4333 empty cabinets in utility grey. The owner started to scrap off the grey paint but stopped finishing the job. After the restauration of my 4343 and 4435 I think of starting a new project. This time I will try to have a budget of maximum $1990, that is 1650€. The plan is to restore the cabinets, use a 2" 244x driver with 2311 horn instead of a 1" 242x and a diy crossover like the modified from Nelson Pass. I have to buy everything as I have no speakers I can use.As the 2235 is very expensive I will use my pair of Coral 15L-70. They have nearly the same TSP as the 2235 and should be a good choice for my project. I will start this weekend with sanding and painting the cabinets. Coral 15L-70: Fo=20Hz, Qms=2,36, Qes=0,28, Qts=0,25, Vas=475 JBL 2235: Fo=20Hz, Qms=2,50, Qes=0,28, Qts=0,25, Vas=458Budget today:300€ empty cabinets200€ pair of Coral 15L-70500€

So today a pair of 2445 arrived. Diaphragms are aftermarket but I want to use Radian 1245s. Got them from a guy next town who used them in a home cinema system. Also I got all parts for the Nelson Pass crossovers and l-pads from 4411 monitors that I can fit to the 4333 cabinets.

Budget today:
300€ for empty cabinets
200€ for pair of Coral 15L-70
240€ for a pair of 2445J
100€ for crossover parts
840€

Do you really want to put 2445's in there?? Sale it and get 2425J instead!! Won't be good!

You need 2312 horns too!!

From Here! (http://www.audioheritage.org/vbulletin/showthread.php?28127-Truextent-Diaphragms-in-JBL-four-inch-compression-drivers&highlight=Beryllium)

Many of us ( myself included ) feel the benefits of the larger 4" diaphragm out-weigh the trade-offs when using it as a dedicated mid.

It's a worthwhile step to make ( towards maybe using a larger mid horn ) .

Sanded and painted the cabinets today. I used RAL 7038 as I also used with my 4343. Also got all screws and hardware to mount the speakers, thats another 100€....
All I need now is a pair of 2405 and a pair of Radian 1245 diaphragms. Still have to assemble the crossover.

Hi,

Why not to use D16R2450/51 SL diaphragms, as its price are round 100 U$D per pice, I believe almost the same as Radian. In that situation I would suggest JBL diaphragms

I already have one Radian 1245-16, so as I am tight on budget I ordered another one. Also I use Radian dias in my 2420 and 2421 and I like them.

Still waiting for the pair of 2405 and the Radian diaphragms, so I started assembling the crossovers. I use the Nelson Pass schematic. Silver mica caps to bypass the MKP caps. For future use there is a provision to disconnect the woofer and Zobel from the crossover for biamping.

Following your build/restoration project and I'm very impressed by the direction you are taking. I know nothing about JBL (I'm an Altec guy), so I won't make any suggestions because I have none. But your direction seems well thought out and budgeted.

I'm a big fan of veneered finishes, but the cabinets look very nice in the gray.

So, nothing to add or promote for your endeavor - just giving you a thumbs-up for an interesting project in the making. Carry on!

Oh . . . and thanks to Earl for the always compelling and interesting info and charts. I look forward to your posts, sir.

yeah, chevelle has excellent tastes. honesty doesn't have a gram of restoration appeal, thus far. its kinda a full-on build.
asides from those cabs of course. upset you took on that paint, over beautiful 70s plywood. id like to have seen that pop. get-em cowboy.

As I worked as a sound technician from the 70s on I like the utility grey studio versions of the 43xx monitors. RAL 7038 matches the original color. In reality the cabinets look awesome with all new screws, foilcals and speakers. Of course there are still some dents and scratches under the new paint but for us in that time they were real workhorses.

Hi Chevelle,

May be I am wrong, but it seems to me that You have used metal screws to fix coils on networks, I think it is not good idea to do that. I would suggest You to use some 'plastic' screws, or glue...

Can you post a crossover schematic ?
Thanks.

I will glue the coils when I have finished the crossovers. Maybe I have to move them. But thank you for the advice.

As the 2445 is very heavy and the whole weight is only hold by the four screws in the front panel I constructed a support for the 2445. The steel struts are connected to the screws that hold the horn to the driver and to the wooden braces on the side walls.

Today the last parts arrived: Pair of 2405 and Radian 1245-16 diaphragm. So I will complete the project this weekend.

final budget:
300€ for empty cabinets
200€ for pair of Coral 15L-70
240€ for pair of 2445J
100€ for crossover parts
150€ for pair of H93/2311 horns
100€ for paint, screws and hardware
280€ for pair of 2405
260€ for pair of Radian dias
1630€ = $1950

Finally I finished my project with a budget of maximum $1990. After break-in the Radian dias there was time to compare to my 4315 that I use for a few months. What should I say, there is nothing to compare to hornloaded mids from a 2" driver !!! And the Coral 15L70 woofer is a killer. Nearly same TSP as the 2235, but only a 3" voicecoil. Very very deep and dry bass. I think there is no need for bi-amping. The cabinet and vent size are within the specs of the Coral datasheet. This woofer is a sleeper and less expensive than a 223x.
