Is anyone using a hdd w/ their tv

Please 'splain in English - complete sentences if possible.

To me, an IT (Information Technology) person, HDD means a Hard Disc Drive - which won't do anything with a TV
unless I add some extra hardware and software to Code and Decode data that might be placed on the drive.

Like, for our home system, we have a TIVO DVR (Digital Video Record) which has a 3TB (teraByte) HDD inside,
with tuners and playback gear built in, so I can record 300+ hours of HDTV (High Def TeleVision).

What do YOU mean when you say hdd ??

Hi,

I don't because my TV is connected to a server. However, most smart TV's can connect an external hard drive via a USB connector.

Yep, it will need to be formatted in some fashion -
do you have a computer of some sort or other?
What did you want to do with your hdd?
Stick movies on it and play them back later?

Do you have a source for movies or just plan to download from the internet?
.mkv files look really nice but you may need something to decode them in a form your TV can recognize ...
.mp4 files are a bit more universal
.avi file more universal still -

While you may be able to play some kind of files back from the hard drive TO your TV,
You can't just copy from your TV to a hard drive without some hardware

Not sure about any info without knowing your TV set details.

I'm not sure it's all new to me, my tablet just burst
into flames a week ago and an image of Carrie fisher
appeared so I'm using an iPhone 5 till i buy another
tablet no home pc ATM. I do want to convert
eventually from DVD to a portable hdd for
playback on the television through the USB, I do have
a memory stick I will plug up today to see how it's
suppose to work.

Whats a proper program for converting DVD to USB on a pc
thank you for helping 😊

Honestly. for most folks its probably easier to grab a used DVD player from the thrift or somewhere and just play DVDs on it into your TV.
certainly a lot cheaper than building up a multimedia PC ...

Once you get the idea of copying movies FROM DVD onto an HDD -
you need a computer to manage the Hard Drive, and some kind of software like Handbrake or whatever
loaded on your PC so when you play the movie on the PC you can decode and transfer the movie from the DVD onto a hard drive.

Bottom line - its probably easier to figure out what is the best solution to what you want to do,
rather than approach a solution sideways by saying "connect an hdd to my TV"

So - what is it you want to do? (and give us the whole dealio...)

My desires can be satisfied using the portable hard disk drive
for video an audio rendering despite presumptuously not having any regard
as a capable media storage driver. Just audio an video not really needing any
photo storage the tv has 1 powered an 1 non powered usb

if i can copy Sherlock Holmes ( not basil rathborn the other bloke ) for instance
an have it on the hdd and play the movie from it I'd be a happier camper
