Looks like JBL has introduced an anniversary edition of the 4312 speakers. I have a pair of the 4312D's and really like them. Is there enough of a difference or improvement to get the new 4312SE speakers? They seem more low power friendly and specs are fairly similar but I don't know enough to know what the differences are between them.

Can anyone recommend the 4312SE Anniversary edition?

Thank you so much!

I don't think anyone here has heard them. I haven't. From looking at the sales material, it looks like an all new design with all different drivers and a real crossover network. So it should be a lot better.

My dealer is getting me pricing, so I have no idea at this point what they cost. I hope the price is reasonable. Thank you, Don, for your input.

They're calling this a wave-guide. I guess I'd be more impressed if it leaned more toward the technology in the M2 and the LSR monitors rather than this little piece of plastic. Not saying it won't work, it just looks like it came out of a $99.95 speaker. On the other hand, the 1200FE-8 is an impressive piece!

I'm pretty sure the tweeter is a variation of the Vifa/Tymphany part used by PSB in almost all their speakers, and by Revel a while ago in the original Performa line I think.

Looks interesting. Shame to lose the neo Differential Drive woofer, though an actual woofer-mid crossover is a thoughtful touch.

Thank you. I will. I get the idea that the 4429's are really good and under rated.

It is a waveguide. It doesn't look like an M2 waveguide because the length of longest waves it handles are much shorter.

Well, I could not wait any longer for information or opinions and ordered a pair. I’ve had them for about a month and absolutely love them. The 4312SE 70th anniversary speakers are absolutely a fun time.

Nice!
So how do they compare with the classic 4312 series?
With that kind of woofer and crossover topology they ought to be closer to a 4412 or lsr32, so I am curious if the designers managed (or even tried) to maintain a 4312 type of sound.

Thank you so much. I can’t give you a proper answer. My brother bought my original 4312D. They only cost under $500 on close out. I briefly played them and enjoyed them but these 70th anniversary speakers are better straight out of the box. They seem to do a lot right while not being the last word in all those audiophile adjectives. I’m not trying to analyze the music but just enjoy and enjoy I absolutely am. I’m not totally familiar with JBL history but have always found myself drawn in and loving them, regardless of model.

Looking at these speakers myself, and curious to know your opinion after having listened to them over the last six months.

I'd be replacing a set of JBL L-50s approaching nearly 40 years old.

What amp are you using? I've got a Yamaha A-S2000.

the jbl 4312e is entirely diferent then then 4312se.

the 4312e has the XO at 2khz and 5khz https://www.jblsynthesis.com/productdetail/id_4312e.html
the 4312se has the xo at 600hz and 5khz https://jblsynthesis.com/productdetail/id_4312se.html

the 4312e runs their 12 inch up to 2khz? wtf are they thinking?
is it a typo and they meant to say 200hz rather then 2khz?

I know it's an old thread, but I just acquired a pair of "E" models, and while I haven't taken any measurements, I can tell you that they sound great. Evidently the 2213nD-2 woofer is run full range. Sound really nice especially on acoustic instruments, especially stringed. They'd only been used a handful of times by the previous owner so they're still in break in mode, but after a couple of days with them I can tell I'm going to really enjoy them.

BTW, the E's, a 6ohm speaker, sound miles better on the 8ohm taps of my McIntosh MC2300 then they did on the 4ohm one's. MILES.

And they love a lot of juice pumped into them.

Looks like I'll be picking up a mid period pair of L100's soon. Quite excited. But in researching them, I found out that they spec out very close to the 4312E. Basically the same size(the L100 is a few pounds heavier), same size drivers(the L100 tweet is 1/4" bigger), and similar crossover points(4312E 2kHz/5kHz;L100 1.5kHz/6kHz) .

Then, after reading everything I could find on the 4312E, which isn't much since it was made for the Japanese market, and seemingly very few folks in the states own a pair, or have wriiten about them, I find this piece from Steve Guttenberg in a 2012 piece in Sound And Vision. https://www.soundandvision.com/content/jbl-l100-century-speaker and the following quote "The L100 lives on as the 4312 E, which is sold in Japan, but sadly not here in the U.S.." First time I've seen anybody compare the 2 speakers.

I'm really looking forward to comparing the two, realizing that the L100's haven't been restored, and the 4312E's are brand new and still breaking in. But while I read a lot of positives on the L100 as legendary speakers, etc., obviously there are many who can't stand them. As I continue to listen to my 4312E's, I simultaneously can understand the dislike, and completely agree with the love. Not unlike how people feel about AR3's, or Klipsch Heritage speakers. And I'm convinced that these JBL's really requires the right amp to drive them. Anything too clinical, too analytical, too dry, is not going to work well, IMO. My McIntosh MC2300 sounds great on the 4312's, and I'm guessing it's because it's a very warm amp(as it's small brother that I own, the MC2105), and adding an original C22 tube preamp to the mix really helps offset any brightness that these speakers produce.

Anyway, that's how I've been spending my Saturday night:D
