HSU ( VTF-3 MK5) makes an excellent sub. You can actually get two (satin black) for $1550. If you don't like it, you can send it back within thirty days and get a full refund. If you just want to spend the entire 5K, you could also take a look at JL Audio (Fathom 113). The L-300s can definitely benefit from a sub. They don't go as low as you would expect. I have a Paradigm PW-2200 which does a very adequate job. I've got my L-300's cut off at 50 Hz. The sub handles everything below that. EARTH SHATTERING :D.

JBL 2245H in 8 cu ft cabinet ala 4645 A-D type cabinet or B460 sub with same driver, especially because it matches the style of the L300 type cabinet.

Wsilva was selling a NIB B460 a while back, not sure if it sold or not. Pretty rare in that condition, it was priced at a good chunk of your budget IIRC.

Heck, for his budget you could buy a pair of 4345s and not even need a sub, or the L300s anymore! ;)

Yeah, those $5K 4345s are growing on trees these days.

I use 2245s in an infinite baffle electronically crossed over at 50 HZ. I also added poly fill to the L300 cabinets and ports to reduce box noise since bass extension is no longer important. I know infinite baffle subs aren't very popular for lots of reasons, but now that I've gone IB I can't imagine going back to boxes. My rig has usable response down to 9 Hz. I can't hear or measure 9 Hz of course, but something structural vibrates upstairs at the opposite end of the house at that frequency.

They can go lower if you are willing to sacrifice ~3.5 dB of overall volume.

Place an 8 ohm, 100+ watt, non-inductive resistor in series with the woofer and turn down the mid and highs by ~3.5 dB. You will definately notice the difference in the bass.
