These observations by Tyll Hertsens precede his conclusions about a three month evaluation project he did with headphone gear. The thoughts are not, however, the least bit specific about private listening. This is the most reasoned take on the subject I have seen in years.
Combine this with the revelation from the excellent Perfecting Sound Forever by Greg Milner that there is unequivocally no such thing as a Golden Ear, and IMO the fog of hyperbole and fanboy fervor that permeates this hobby is put into perspective.
