These observations by Tyll Hertsens precede his conclusions about a three month evaluation project he did with headphone gear. The thoughts are not, however, the least bit specific about private listening. This is the most reasoned take on the subject I have seen in years.

Combine this with the revelation from the excellent Perfecting Sound Forever by Greg Milner that there is unequivocally no such thing as a Golden Ear, and IMO the fog of hyperbole and fanboy fervor that permeates this hobby is put into perspective.

Let me add this page. The Floyd Toole lecture is most likely spot on, but it is the written introduction by Tyll that I am pointing out. There is a practicality quotient to consider, and he speaks to that.
