T.A.D. 2001 Driver - Unusual Configuration

Got me an unusual T.A.D. driver in my mitts today.

It appears to be a real early 2001 but with a few distinct differences.Perhaps a Bart L prototype :eek: with some JBL holdovers.

Take a look see at the pictures and let me know what you think.

What an oddball. Have you ever seen a driver without the horn interface not machined flat and crinkle painted?? What's beyond the bug screen is that painted as well and is there a taper on the painted surface part of the throat?? It look's straight but that could just be an illusion. That almost looks like a woofers pot not a CD?? The top plates are quite different as well?? Look's like an old Le-85

Behind the screen appears to be the magnetic slug with an unpainted chamber directly to the rear of the top plates phase plug.
No taper on the expulsion oriface.And no shorting ring as in the later driver.

What gets me is the obvious difference in the end caps machining of both sides on the early unit.

Really looks JBL to me.Kinda like a JBL pot and magnet with a different top plate to accomidate the T.A.D. diaphragm.I think it was one of Bart"s science projects.

I believe the driver ( on the right within your first pic ) is a Pioneer PD-801 ( even though the little red sticker says something different ) .

I'll post a few pics ( of a pair of PD-801's ) later .

The 2001 diaphragm fits in perfectly and sounds great.The guy who I acquired it from used to work for a major sound company who used vast amounts of TAD drivers

He also said it had a TAD identification emblem on it. :dont-know:

Has the same gauss measurement as a 2001driver (about 18K).

Maybe Earl is onto something. :confused: About it being a PD series.

Do these have Be diaphragms?
I suppose they do looking at the protection mesh...

If you look at the small label on the side you can see the old pioneer logo and PD-005A.

Maybe this is a very early driver.

So once you guys diagnosed what it was I did some diggin and found out that it is supposedly the offering previous to the TD 2001.

The PD used a Be diaphragm BUT the top plate was configured differently. A newer style TD2001 diaphragm wont directly bolt in..

A new diaphragm can be redrilled to fit the PD top plate.My unit has a metal template that was used to reconfigure and redrill the top plate to accept the newer diaphragms.

Thats why the TD diaphragm fit right into my unit.

Sorry to revive an old thread. But I'm curious if anyone has found a suitable replacement diaphragm that fits into these PD-801 drivers.

I have a pair that need diaphragms.

My pair have two centering pins along with the three screw holes for the screws that hold the diaphragm down. My guess is that I could simply pull those pins and the TD-2001 (or aftermarket) diaphragm would fit into the PD-801 (centering by ear in that case).

I notice in the pictures of the PD-801 shown in the thread, those centering pins are missing. So I'll bet that's what the prior owner did.

Thanks for any information you would have on how to revive these early PD-801 TD-2001 drivers would be appreciated.

have you find an answer? A friend has some of the same bodies. Would Truextent or Radian make a compatible diaphragm?
