The boom in digital streaming may generate profits for record labels and free content for consumers, but it spells disaster for today's artists across the creative industries

A while ago Thom Yorke (http://www.theguardian.com/music/thom-yorke) and the rest of Radiohead got some attention when they pulled their recent record from Spotify (http://www.theguardian.com/technology/spotify). A number of other artists have also been in the news, publicly complaining about streaming music services (Black Keys (http://www.theguardian.com/music/black-keys), Aimee Mann (http://www.theguardian.com/music/2013/jan/29/aimee-mann-review) and David Lowery (http://www.theguardian.com/profile/davidlowry) of Camper van Beethoven and Cracker). Bob Dylan (http://www.theguardian.com/music/bobdylan), Metallica (http://www.theguardian.com/music/metallica) and Pink Floyd (http://www.theguardian.com/music/pinkfloyd) were longtime Spotify holdouts – until recently. I've pulled as much of my catalogue from Spotify as I can. AC/DC (http://www.theguardian.com/music/acdc), Garth Brooks and Led Zeppelin (http://www.theguardian.com/music/ledzeppelin) have never agreed to be on these services in the first place.

So what's the deal? What are these services, what do they do and why are these musicians complaining?

I told y'all about Robert Fripp, who controls distribution right for King Crimson and related acts.
He kept finding Crimson tracks on Spotify, even tho he had NEVER signed a contract with them,
and they were slow to get the content pulled from their service when he'd remind
them they had no contract to play the tracks..

He basically stopped touring for the last 6 years so he could track all these new e-services that were selling his
content to other, even tho NONE OF THEM had rights to do so and had never paid him a dime!

Think piracy is killing the music industry? This chart suggests otherwise.

I think "The Music Industry" is doing well,
but the artists are still being cheated in multiple ways ...
and "The Music Industry" uses "funny" accounting techniques,
just like Hollywood does!

Think piracy is killing the music industry?

I think you missed the point of the article.

it is NOT about piracy
it is NOT about the health of the music industry

it IS about new artists being squeezed by streaming services.

Possibly. Did you read the article that the Washington Post link to.
The report from the London School of Economics (http://www.scribd.com/doc/172985274/LSE-MPP-Policy-Brief-9-Copyright-and-Creation)

yes, I did and see no relation to the topic. :dont-know:

Pandora costs seen dropping

Posted 06:46 PM ET

Internet radio company Pandora Media (P) is expected to pay less for content in future years and see higher ad revenue, Cowen & Co. said in a note. Cowen boosted its target for Pandora's stock to 29 from 23, with an outperform rating. Pandora competes with Apple's (AAPL) iTunes Radio, which debuted in Sept. and quickly gained 11 mil listeners. Pandora pays more per track, but Apple's negotiations with music labels may cut costs for Pandora too, Cowen said. Pandora edged up 0.4%. Apple rose 0.6%.

The NSA is busy destroying the Internet so I really don't understand his angst. :rotfl:

There you go!

... is busy destroying the Internet - angst. :(

The angst comes when you are thinking twice about what you want to express.
The Stasi (Secret service of former GDR /DDR / eastern Germany) with its possibilities was a Kindergarden in comparison.

The Eagles knew about this long ago ..;)

Cruisin' down the center of a two way street
Wond'rin' who is really in the driver's seat
Mindin' my bus'ness along comes big brother
Says, "Son, you better get on one side or the other."

I'm out on the border, I'm walkin' the line
Don't you tell me 'bout your law and order
I'm try'n' to change this water to wine.

After a hard day, I'm safe at home
Foolin' with my baby on the telephone
Out of nowhere somebody cuts in and
Says, "Hmm, you in some trouble boy, we know where you're been.

Never mind your name, just give us your number, mm
Never mind your face, just show us your card, mm
And we wanna know whose wing are you under
You better step to the right or we can make it hard

Don't you tell me 'bout your law and order
Sick and tired of all your law and order
Sick and tired of it
