Not sure exactly what crossover you mean, but I replaced the rc1436 opamp on my 5234 crossover with the conversion unit from these guys: http://browndog-adapters.com/ It made a big difference.

I have been eyeing these guys up for a Soundcraftsmen preamp I have. Over on AK there is nothing but good things being said about them.

I've had good luck replacing the dual op-amps in my URIE XO with LM4562. Available in PDIP, SOIC and metal can, TO5 style.
Also replaced the 5532's in my EQ.

Is it any easy job for a novice to do and which is the best op amp to realise a significant audio improvement?

I don't recall anyone writing a detailed approach to upgrading the 523x series of crossovers. The late Scott Fitlin had some experience with the 525 and posted about it more than once. The most detailed post I think is post number 4 here: http://www.audioheritage.org/vbulletin/showthread.php?20168-Jbl-M552-vs-JBL-UREI-525-crossover

Hi Rich,

Some of the better discrete opamps might be worth an audible trial but the PS in the 5235 may not have sufficient capacity as these opamps use higher bias then the factory parts and may not fit the space on tge board

Have look at the BB Audioopamps Farnel in sell them for a quick fix
